Internal Linking - Off-Page SEO Factors

Monday 22 September 2014
You will find that building external links is not as easy as you would want it to be. The good news is that all of your competitors are in the same boat. Because you have more control over your own pages, we recommend focusing on internal off-page search engine optimization before you move on to external links. It is absolutely critical that you take advantage of every Web page on your site to maximize the ranking potential of all your landing pages.
The internal SEO process involves the following steps:
  • Maximize the PR of high-priority landing pages by linking to them from an adequate number of pages, preferably pages with high link importance (e.g. home page or other pages in global navigation).
  • Eliminating all PR dilution from links to pages without "rankable" content.
  • Optimizing lower-level pages on your site to increase link relevance going to your landing pages.

PageRank Optimization – Funneling and Avoiding Dilution

All Web sites have a limited amount of PageRank to work with. The total amount of PageRank a site has is strongly influenced by the external sites that link to it. Theoretically, adding more pages to your site incrementally increases its PageRank. However, it does not increase your PageRank enough to affect rankings significantly. Because a site's PR is limited, it is important to distribute PR so that as much PR as possible goes to your most relevant landing pages. You accomplish this by linking to your landing pages wherever it is appropriate throughout your site.
In addition to linking to the right pages, you also want to avoid excessively linking to pages that do not have keyword-relevant content. For example, many sites have a Privacy Policy page, which is not a high SEO value page. It does not make sense to give your Privacy Policy page the same amount of PageRank as other globally-linked pages. You would be taking importance away from higher value pages, which would make them less likely to rank well in search engines. Previously, it was appropriate to use a rel="nofollow" attribute on such links. However, due to changes in Google's algorithm, we no longer suggest utilizing that technique.
In most circumstances, it is not worth worrying about PR dilution from one or two links, especially if your site has a significant amount of PageRank. But if the linking is excessive or your site has a small amount of PR, the best way to eliminate the dilution is to generate the links with JavaScript or AJAX that is defined off page or by putting the links into <iframe> elements. Please note that we said JavaScript or AJAX defined off the page. Google has made some strides in passing PR through JavaScript-based links where the target URL is identifiable by spidering the page (e.g. if the destination page is identified in the link's onclick attribute).

Creating Navigational Links for Landing Pages

Several years ago it was good search engine optimization practice to create a global navigation that linked to all of the top landing pages on your site with optimized anchor text. We do not feel that it is good practice anymore. Adding a keyword to the anchor text of a global link could lead to a filter being applied to your site for that keyword.
Instead of focusing on SEO when choosing your anchor text for global links, you should focus on what would make the most sense for your visitors. We also suggest utilizing subnavigational elements to distribute PageRank on certain pages instead of making links global. For example, let us assume you had several topic hubs that each contained 10 articles about the topic. Rather than creating a global link to the main landing page for that topic, we would suggest linking to a main Articles page that links to each of the topic hubs. Every article within each topic would also link to the main page for the topic. Although the end result of this strategy is fewer links to the landing page, we feel that it will lead to an adequate amount of internal relevance while also minimizing the chances of throwing up any red flags for over-optimization.

Avoiding "Supplemental" Pages

Up until several years ago, Google used to tag certain pages in their SERPs as "Supplemental" results. A page was placed in Google's supplemental index if it had very low PR and/or if it contained too much duplicate information. If any of the pages on your site are currently in Google's supplemental index, then you are getting essentially zero search engine optimization benefit from them. Supplemental pages will not be able to rank for any competitive keywords that are utilized on them. And perhaps more importantly, you will not be able to create any link relevance through the page's outbound internal links.
Unfortunately, Google no longer identifies pages as supplemental when they rank in SERPs. It is possible, however, to identify pages that are in Google's main index. You can do so by using the following query in a Google search:
site:www.example.com/* (use your domain instead of example.com)
This modified site command will limit the results to pages in Google's main index. By comparing the list of pages returned in this command to a full list of URLs on your site you can determine which of your pages are currently supplemental.
You can usually promote a Web page into Google's main index by: a) linking to it from pages with high importance, b) linking to it from more pages, and/or c) making the page more unique by adding body content and optimizing its Title and Meta Description.
We have found that many pages on sites are supplemental simply due to a lack of inbound links. For instance, site owners will often write a press release or article and then link to it only once from a "in the news" or articles page. One internal link to a page is rarely enough to get it out of Google's supplemental index. Creating subnavigations that link all of your press releases or related articles to each other is a good solution to this problem.

Key Takeaways – Internal Linking

To sum up, here are some key things to remember in regards to internal link optimization:
  • Create a global navigation that is spiderable, but focuses on usability as opposed to SEO.
  • Make sure that all pages that will function as landing pages or have theme supporting content have at least a handful of internal inbound links from relevant pages.
  • Minimize the number of supplemental pages on your site by linking to them from more pages and/or adding unique content to them.

Off-Page SEO Factors – External Linking

Monday 22 September 2014
This page's content is still being developed. We apologize for the inconvenience. Please bookmark this page and revisit it in a week or two.

Finding Existing Links

One of the first things you should do is determine what pages are currently linking to your site. You can find your links by using Yahoo! Site Explorer and Google Webmaster Tools.
In order to utilize Google Webmaster Tools, you will have to verify ownership of the site you are evaluating. We do not recommend putting any stock in the Google link: command. That particular command will return only a small percentage of the links that Google knows about.
After you verify ownership and log in to the Webmaster Tools console, you can find your external links by clicking on the "Your site on the web" link in the left navigation and then selecting "Links to your site". You will then have the option to export the link data as a spreadsheet. It will show all the pages linking to your site, which page on your site they link to, and the last time each link was found by Google.
Unlike Google, Yahoo! Site Explorer does not require you to verify ownership. You can get the number of pages indexed and Inlinks data for any domain that you choose. After you put a URL into the tool, you will want to click on the tab labeled "Inlinks". There will be a dropdown menu next to the text that reads "Show Inlinks:". By default the Inlinks page will show links from "All Pages". You should select "Except from this domain" in the pulldown to limit the Site Explorer results to external links. You will only be able to view (or export) up to 1,000 results. If you have more than 1,000 external links, then you will have to rely on Google Webmaster Tools for a complete data set.

Optimizing Existing Links

Once you have a complete list of links to your site you will want to seek out the pages that are the most relevant for your targeted keywords. In Yahoo! Site Explorer, you should view the Title tags of the linking pages to get an idea of their content. With Google Webmaster Tools data, you will have to look at page URLs in order to guess the content of the linking pages.
You should then determine if there is some way to influence the anchor text of the inbound link or content of the linking pages. More often than not you will be unable to change the pages. However, there are some scenarios where you can have some influence on a linking site. For instance, you may have a partnership or affiliation with a theme relevant site or you may own the linking site in question. You will want to maximize the link relevancy of any links from such controllable sites by tweaking Title/Meta tags, body content, and/or anchor text.
By far the most important thing to do when evaluating your external inbound links is to make sure that the link benefit is going somewhere. It is not uncommon for a site to be completely redeveloped with brand new URLs. In those instances, you can lose a significant amount of external link SEO value if 301 redirects are not implemented when the URLs change. That is of course assuming that there are links to the interior pages that are moved. If there was a link to a URL and it was not redirected, then the value of the link would disappear once the search engines spidered it again and received a 404 error.
We have found that Google Webmaster Tools may not return external links that are going to 404 pages. To identify these links, you should view the "Not found" errors that Google reports in the "Crawl errors" section under Diagnostics. If you are certain that an error being reported is not internal, then it could be due to an external link. You can verify this by clicking on the "Linked From" column for each error or by downloading the sources of all errors on the site, which is available at the bottom of the page.
When implementing redirects to capture link benefit, you should 301 redirect the 404 page to the page that will maximize link relevancy. Redirecting such a link to the home page might be better than doing nothing. However, you may get even more SEO benefit by redirecting the link to the page on your site that is most relevant for keywords used on the linking page.

Researching Competition

If you are trying to increase your search engine rankings for a particular keyword, you should closely scrutinize the external links going to the top ranking sites for that keyword. We recommend focusing on the best Google ranked sites rather than sites that rank well only in the other engines.
You will have to use Yahoo! Site Explorer to research your competition since you cannot verify ownership of sites you do not own. You should view the Site Explorer results for as many competitors as you can, but the top 5 sites would be a good start.
As we suggested you do when viewing the links to your site, you should focus on the linking pages that have the most relevance for the keyword phrase you are researching. Visit highly relevant pages and determine if obtaining a link from them is possible. You should consider doing anything you can to get a link from a page that could pass a significant amount of SEO value. Contact site owners directly to determine if an arrangement can be made.
Even though obtaining external links is often a necessity for optimal search engine rankings, you have to remember that quality is infinitely more important than quantity. Ten high-quality links could improve rankings much more than 1,000 low-quality links. Also, large quantities of links popping up quickly is very likely to get you into trouble with the search engines.
The following guidelines should be used when developing external links:
  • Obtain no more than one link from any particular domain
  • Only obtain links from sites that share a common theme or use your keywords
  • Vary the anchor text as much as possible so that one keyword does not make up a large percentage of your inbound anchor text
  • Obtain links gradually if you can control the pace
These guidelines will help you maximize the SEO value of any links you obtain while keeping you out of trouble with the search engines. They will also prevent you from inadvertently doing more harm than good by triggering a filter.

Key Takeaways – External Linking

To sum up, here are some key things to remember in regards to building external links for search engine optimization:
  • Evaluate your current external inbound links. Determine if there is a way to increase their benefit.
  • Make special note of any external links that are going to old pages that now return a 404 status. Implement 301 redirects from the old URL to the most appropriate landing page.
  • Research the external links going to the top 5 sites in Google for your targeted keyword. Identify the most relevant links and contact the site owners to see if an arrangement can be made for the link you want in the exact format you want.
  • Follow the guidelines laid out above to avoid getting into trouble with the search engines.
  • And finally, remember that you should always focus on link quality, not quantity.

On-Page SEO Factors – Body Content & Keyword Density

Sunday 21 September 2014
In the past, it was possible to see some benefit from optimizing Title and Meta tags in an entire section of your site without editing any on-page content. This is no longer the case. If you are going through the process of updating Title and Meta tags throughout your site, then you should also make sure that the keywords you are focusing on are used in the unique content on each page. The more content that you have the better, but the quality of the content is more important than the quantity.

Keyword Density

The keyword density percentage for a particular phrase in the body content of a page can be calculated with the following formula:
Keyword Density % =   (Number of instances of keyword phrase) (Number of words in phrase)
Total # of body words on page
  x 100
The first thing we should say about keyword density is that there is no ideal percentage for SEO. It would be nice be able to edit your pages until you hit that perfect percentage and then see your rankings improve. Unfortunately for everyone who is giving search engine optimization a try, that's not the way it works. However, the reality of keyword densities may end up being less work for you than if there were an ideal percentage to hit. The truth is that it is more than enough to be within a range of 2 to 7 percent keyword density for any phrase that you are trying to optimize a particular landing page for. Any density less than 2% may not be high enough for the search engines, and any percentages higher than that range may look somewhat spammy.
It's extremely unlikely that stuffing keywords more than we recommend here will generate a penalty on its own. However, if it is one of several red flags that Google considers over-optimization, you could end up getting yourself filtered. There's no upside from stuffing your pages with keywords, so we feel there's no reason to do it.
You should also consider the distribution of the keyword phrases that appear on your pages. For instance, let's assume that you are using a keyword phrase five times on a 500 word page. You should try to distribute those usages evenly throughout the page – approximately once every 100 words or so – instead of stuffing the phrase five times somewhere randomly on the page. An even distribution will read much more naturally and will be unlikely to throw up any red flags for keyword stuffing.

Page Length

We do not necessarily feel that page length is directly factored into the search engines' algorithms when they determine a page's relevancy. However, it is safe to say that more content is generally better. Typically we will recommend that a page contain at least 400 words of unique content, though don't consider it a rule that can never be broken. For example, you might have created a page template for your site specifically for embedding videos. It's not always going to be possible to write 400 words describing the video, nor would it be very useful for the visitor. In that instance, a short description describing the video would be more than adequate for search engine optimization purposes. Assuming you have also gone through the trouble of optimizing the page's Title, Meta Description, and <h1> tags, then it should be able to potentially rank for whatever keywords are most relevant to the video. Please note that we said "potentially rank" instead of saying that it "will rank". Off-page SEO factors are what will ultimately determine that video page's ranking. We're simply saying that it could adequately function as a landing page from an on-page SEO standpoint.
It's clear based on what we've said thus far that more content is generally better but not always a requirement. We've also stated that page length probably doesn't factor directly into rankings. So how does more content potentially help a landing page? First, if the content is well-written, informational and interesting, then it is much more likely to be read by someone and then linked to for its value as a resource. The same goes for content that is entertaining. People will link to resourceful and/or entertaining content. So more content can make a page more linkable, which will usually improve its ranking potential.
The second benefit of having more content on a page is increased organic search traffic from long-tail keyword phrases. The more content that you have on a page the more keyword phrases you can possibly optimize for. Additionally, the more content that you have the more likely you are to have someone arrive from a random string of words that appear on your page. Each one of these potential keywords will have minimal search activity individually, but when you add them all up it is a significant number.
The biggest takeaway from this section is that there is no ideal page length. Your pages can be as long (or short) as you want them to be. Just remember that more content, assuming it's link-worthy content, is always better. Theoretically speaking, however, you could make a page rank for one or two key phrases with a minimal amount of content if it had the right amount of external relevance through inbound links. Conversely, if you don't have any inbound links to a page, then no amount of content will directly help those one or two key phrases. In other words, a 200-word page about Keyword A has no significantly better chance of ranking than a 500-word page about Keyword A. It will only potentially help with long-tail keywords that you wouldn't be able to optimize for without the additional content to work with.

Key Takeaways – Best Practices for Optimizing Body Content

To sum up, here are some key things to remember when creating or editing body content for your landing pages:
  • There is no ideal keyword density. Anyone who says otherwise is lying to you. Shoot for a percentage somewhere between 2 and 7%. If your density is on the higher end of that range, then consider changing some instances of your keyword to target slightly different keyword variations.
  • More content is almost always better, but remember that the quality of your content is what is most important. You want content that someone would want to link to because it is interesting, entertaining and/or resourceful.

SEO Methodology - A Step by Step Guide

Sunday 21 September 2014
We have developed a simple search engine optimization methodology that you can use to optimize a page on your site for a single keyword phrase in Google. We have broken it up into 3 distinct phases: on-page SEO, internal off-page SEO, and then external off-page SEO. You can also download this step-by-step SEO guide as a PDF.
Before you can begin the SEO process for a keyword, you must first select the landing page you hope will rank for the phrase. In most instances, the best landing page to select for Google can be found with the following query: site:example.com keyword phrase. This will show you what page from your site Google considers to be the most relevant for the keyword. If you decide to create a brand new page for the targeted phrase, then you should utilize the keyword in the filename. Once you have selected the landing page you can then begin the following search engine optimization process.

Phase 1 – Optimize your Landing Page (On-Page SEO)

  1. Use keyword phrase in the Title tag. Phrase should end within first 70 characters.
  2. Use keyword phrase in Meta Description. Phrase should end within first 156 characters.
  3. Use keyword phrase in <h1> tag if there is one.
  4. The keyword phrase should be used in the page's text-based body content at least twice. On pages more than 500 words in length, make sure that keyword density is at least 1.5% (but no more than 6 or 7%). Keyword usage should be evenly distributed throughout the page.

Phase 2 – Internal Off-Page SEO

  1. Identify additional pages on your site that can also be optimized for targeted keyword phrase.
  2. Once the support page(s) has been identified, maximize the link relevance passed on to the landing page by: a) using the keyword phrase in page Title and Meta Description, b) using the keyword phrase in non-hyperlinked body content, and c) hyperlinking one instance of the keyword phrase to the intended landing page.
  3. Maximize the number of optimal internal links to your landing page. Vary the anchor text going to your landing page by using slight variations of the keyword phrase (e.g. singular/plural, synonyms, long-tail variations, etc.)
  4. This phase can be extended by creating more pages support the landing page. But unless you have significantly fewer pages than your competition, then you would probably be better served to move on to Phase 3.

Phase 3 – External Off-Page SEO (Link Building)

After you have optimized as many of your pages as possible and linked them to your landing page, you should then move on to external link building. There is no simple step-by-step process for this phase. You will have to determine how to make your content more linkable so that you can develop links naturally. You should also research your competition to find the most relevant links to your landing page. Keep the following guidelines in mind as you try to build external links for Google search engine optimization:
  • Always seek quality instead of quantity. Focus on finding pages that are relevant for your targeted keyword.
  • The optimal link from a 3rd party site is the same as an optimal link from one of your own pages. The targeted keyword phrase will ideally be in the Title and Meta Description, body content and the linking anchor text.
  • Avoid site-wide (i.e. global, run-of-site) links in all circumstances. This is an especially important guideline if the site is not keyword-relevant. Your landing page will more than likely get filtered for the targeted keyword unless you have high quality links to legitimize the relevancy.
  • Brainstorm link bait or link magnet ideas so that inbound links will hopefully develop naturally.
  • Unfortunately, the most relevant links are only attainable by providing an incentive to the site owners. Advertising relationships, partnerships and bartering possibilities should be explored to obtain the most valuable links.
  • Do not pay for a link from a non-relevant site unless it has significant traffic potential.

Google “Pigeon” Updates Local Search Algorithm With Stronger Ties To Web Search Signal

Thursday 7 August 2014
Google has released a new algorithm to provide a more useful, relevant and accurate local search results that are tied more closely to traditional web search ranking signals. The changes will be visible within the Google Maps search results and Google Web search results.
Note: We’ve named this update the Pigeon update.
The core changes are behind the scenes, but it does impact local search results rankings and some local businesses may notice an increase or decrease in web site referrals, leads and business from the change.
Google told us that the new local search algorithm ties deeper into their web search capabilities, including the hundreds of ranking signals they use in web search along with search features such as Knowledge Graph, spelling correction, synonyms and more.
In addition, Google said that this new algorithm improves their distance and location ranking parameters.
The new algorithm is currently rolling out for US English results and aims to provide a more useful and relevant experience for searchers seeking local results. Google didn’t share any details about if and when the update would roll out more widely in other countries and languages.

Google has not commented on the percent of queries impacted by this algorithm update, nor if certain web spam algorithms were deployed in this update.

SEO Tactics

Thursday 3 July 2014
SEO or search engine optimization is the web technique and activity by which a website is given a better page rank on search engine results. Actually SEO is an unpaid web activity however if you hire a SEO company India, it may offer you or advise you paid SEO packages also. SEO India is gaining grounds rapidly and SEO services India are much in demand now.

SEO is something which even school kids in India are fiddling with but business website promotion is no kid’s play. So if you are looking for some SEO push for your website, you better think of hiring a well established SEO firm India or SEO agency India with a blazing track record. SEO expertise is earned with a lot of practical hands on experience. No college degree or IT course can train you for SEO work.
What can SEO Company India do for you?

You can say SEO services India is nothing but an Internet marketing strategy. An SEO company India tries to understand how a search engine like Google works, what technology it uses to select or discard a web content, how do net users search for content, what keywords do they normally use, which search engines do they mostly prefer etc. Based upon all this information and knowledge of search engine technologies, a SEO firm India proceeds to promote a client website. Some of the common tricks used by SEO India are as follows:
* Cross linking: SEO companies links different pages of same website to provide greater number of links to most important pages so that visibility of that page can be improved.

* Keyword research and analysis: This is very crucial aspect of SEO services India. Writing content which is frequently used in searched keyword phrases by web users, also adds to the visibility of a website. It involves finding out keywords which are most relevant and popular for the particular form of website. More relevant and popular the keywords used in content will be, the better will be the chances of page gaining traffic.

* Updating content: By frequently updating a website content, SEO Agency India causes the search engines crawlers and spiders to return back more frequently to the website as search engines are designed to give weightage to pro-active websites
.

* Meta Data Keywords: Inserting relevant keywords in the site’s meta data, including the title tag and meta description, improves the relevancy of a website's search listings which increases traffic.

* URL normalization: Another tool in the hand of SEO India professionals is URL normalization. It is a technique through which an SEO firm India modifies or standardizes URL into a normalized URL or canonical URL so that it is possible to verify if two syntactically dissimilar URLs may be of same website domain. By URL normalization, an SEO company India tries to reduce duplicate indexing of a website so that all versions of a website are counted towards the page’s link popularity score.

* Backlinks and inbound links: Another trick from the bouquet of SEO services India is building backlinks or inbound links for a website. Backlink or inbound links are created when one website links to some other website. The more are the backlinks into a site, the better its SEO score is.

SEO Vs SEM
SEM stands for Search engine marketing and it is a wider concept which includes both paid and unpaid SEO tactics. Unpaid or natural SEO tactics are known as organic Search engine optimization and paid or artificial Search engine optimization is known as inorganic SEO. SEO Services India may include both organic as well as inorganic SEO and it depends on the client which technique they want SEO firm India to employ. Organic SEO can have slow results and succeed in longer run. It is less expensive SEO method. The inorganic SEO tactics give instant results like high page rank and visibility but they may or may not be successful in the long run. Moreover inorganic SEO is much more expensive compared to organic SEO.

SEO Vs SMM ( Social Media Marketing)

SMM or Social Media Marketing is another tool that SEO India can use to promote your business website. An SEO agency India can launch social media presence of its client by creating its Facebook, LinkedIn, Tweeter account and post content and links which attract and divert Social media users to the website the SEO Company India is promoting.
